The Essence of the Claddagh...
The Claddagh is named for a small fishing village near Galway Bay. It’s told that a 17th-century resident of this village, Richard Joyce, was kidnapped on his way to the Irish slave plantations in the West Indies to work. He was sold to a Moorish goldsmith, to whom he became an apprentice. When Joyce was finally released from captivity, he returned to Galway to find his one true love waiting for him. As a sign of his commitment to her, he gave her what is now known as the first Claddagh wedding ring. The hands represent friendship; the heart, love; and the crown, loyalty.
