A traditional draped garment found in women's’ highland dress. Typically consisting of two to four yards of tartan material wrapped around the waist and/or shoulders, with some left loose for covering the head. The Earasaid was typically pleated around the waist and held in place with a belt, just like a man's great kilt. Often it was also pinned by a brooch at the chest.
This utilitarian yet elegant garment came into being in the late 1500's and stayed relatively mainstream until the late 1740's. It emerged from the leine and brat (cloak) that was worn by highland women from the 1300's to 1500's. It was during the early 1500's that the feile mhor (great kilt) or feile breacan (belted plaid) began to emerge and gain popularity among Scottish men. This led to Scottish Highland women designing their own style of belted plaid ... the Earasaid.
Our Wool Tartan Earasaids are made from 100% wool material, woven in the UK.
USA Kilts' Nordic Heritage tartan was created for anyone who wishes to celebrate their Nordic / Norse / Scandinavian roots, or anyone who is inspired by Nordic culture, history and legends.
This exclusive tartan represents the spirit of those peoples of the North who had such a powerful impact on the history and culture of the British Isles and North America. The colors represent the flags of the Nordic Council nations and territories (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland). They also represent essential aspects of Nordic culture and the dramatic climate of the far north:
Blue - the ocean and seas, the northern sky, woad-dyed wool, the Norse god Odin.
Red - Fire, passion, the warrior tradition of the Norse, and the god Thor.
Gold - Golden treasure and jewelry and amber; known to the Norse as “Freyja’s tears”.
White - Ice, snow, the caps of waves, silver, and the compass “Sunstones” of the Vikings.
Black and Grey - Winter night, the fjords of Norway, and the rocky shores of Iceland and Greenland.
Marled Grey yarn - Nordic farmers, such as the Icelanders, could not always acquire dyes for their cloth, so they created patterns by intermingling wool from black, gray and white sheep.
