History of the Irish Claddagh…
The Claddagh, with hands representing friendship, a heart to stand for love, and a crown signifying loyalty, denotes the essential components of a good relationship. The most widely accepted origin story for the symbol is that of Richard Joyce. Richard was captured at sea by Moorish pirates and, while held as a slave, crafted the ring for his one true love back home. Upon his eventual release, he bestowed the ring as a gift to his love, and the two were married.
What is Gold Vermeil? Gold vermeil is the name jewelers give to a gold-on-silver plating process. Ordinary gold plate uses a base metal such as copper, nickel or brass and adds a thin layer of gold - usually around .5 microns thick. Vermeil instead uses Stirling silver as the base and a layer of 14K gold no less than 2.5 microns thick. Vermeil will not rub off and retains its luster, yet is more affordable than pure gold.
