This tartan appears first in the 1842 'Vestiarium Scoticum' of John Sobieski Stuart and Charles Edward Stuart (aka John Carter Allen and Charles Manning Allen).
It is interesting to note that much of the forged sixteenth century manuscript on which the Vestiarium Scoticum was based was supposedly transcribed by Sir Richard Urquhart in 1721. Sample in Paton's collection. Sometimes called Urquhart Old or Ancient but both are misnomers since this is younger than Urquhart Broad Red Variant.
