A town as well as a county, Tipperary is a landlocked county in the south of Ireland bordered by Waterford, Kilkenny, Louth, Offaly, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Cork. Once part of the historical Kingdom of Munster, by the mid 14th century Tipperary was controlled by the powerful Earls of Ormonde (whose wealth --and family name, Butler-- resulted from their service to the kings of England). Thanks to its agricultural wealth Tipperary has drawn visitors for thousands of years. In the first millennium Patrick preached near Cashel. In the mid 19th century Tipperary drew some of Ireland’s most famous poets & playwrights --although it was always Tipperary’s sportsmen who enjoyed the most fame. Today the Rock of Cashel is still one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations. - notes by Sarah Nagle
One of a series of Irish District tartans designed (and copyrighted) by Polly Wittering of the House of Edgar in 1995. This is not an 'officially sanctioned' District tartan but has proven popular.
