Peter MacDonald suggests that Wilson may have named the pattern after Cluny MacPherson of '45 fame as a romantic Highland hero. He also said that in 1817, the chief, Duncan MacPherson, authenticated the Caledonia/Kidd tartan as the correct Clan MacPherson tartan, apparently unaware of this sett, although this was perhaps for his own use. This tartans dates to 1819, if not earlier.
