The most long-lived MacMillan Tartan is the "Old" or "Ancient." It first appears in Plate 51 of Ronald McIan's illustrations of accepted clan tartans produced in the 1840s. This romantic print shows a MacMillan warrior in fierce combat with a Cromwellian soldier. His tartan is described as Buchanan but it is quite recognisable as Ancient/Old MacMillan, lacking the Buchanan white stripe.
