This sett comes from the MacGregor-Hastie collection in the Scottish Tartans Society. The collection dates between 1930-50 and forms the major part of the cloth archive. The Hunting MacFarlane is based on Logan's count for the principle clan tartan (1831) with red changed to green. Hunting can be reliably dated to at least 1906 (Johnston).
MacFarlanes, 'sons of Parlan', came originally from the lands about Arrochar in the West of Scotland. The clan was proscribed and their lands forfeited, in the same way as the MacGregors. Many emigrated and some changed their name: Bartholomew is a Southern form of the name. The chiefship is vacant.
