The earliest record of this basic set is from D.W. Stewart's 'Old and Rare Scottish Tartans' (1893). It has been woven in various colors with the same basic design for many years. The red and green version is popularly known as the Green Menzies or as Menzies Hunting. However, Stewart also lists a black and red version as "Menzies Hunting."
The black and white version first appears in Robert Bain's 1938 book. In 2006 it was regarded by the clan as its mourning tartan.
