Heritage and Spirit in one bold necklace!
Crafted in Ireland of Sterling silver, this beautiful pendant is based on the common motifs of the famous Celtic standing crosses found throughout the Emerald Isle.
Intricately crafted Celtic knots adorn the four arms of the cross as well as the halo. This Celtic cross necklace is double-sided, so no matter which side faces out, the same beauty and power shines forth.
A Long Standing Tradition...
The high cross (or standing cross) is a uniquely Irish tradition from the Dark Ages. Ornately carved, free-standing crosses of stone were erected all throughout Ireland in celebration of faith and to dedicate sacred spaces such as churches and monasteries. In fact, the Irish Celtic cross was based on a pre-Christian sun symbol, the sun wheel. The circle around the intersection of the cross originally represented the rising sun and the arms were the wheel spokes, denoting seasons and the turning of the year -- the path of the sun. Celtic Christian missionaries adapted the symbol by extending the spokes out beyond the rim of the wheel to form cross arms, and the lower spoke even longer to form the base of the cross. The sun wheel was now a halo; symbolic of the Light of the World, Jesus, and the unity of the Holy Trinity. And of course celtic knotwork was brought into the art of the church as well resulting in wonders like the Book of Kells. Thus, a blending of Christian and Pagan symbols resulted in one of the most iconic monument forms in the world. Nothing says “Ireland” quite like it.
